“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom” – Aristotle
Many people do not reach the positions that they rightly deserve in life. The main reason for this under-achievement is a lack of awareness of their potential. Our opinion of ourselves critically influences the outcome of everything we do. Self-esteem is a major component in determining success or failure. Once we become aware of our capabilities and develop inner strength, we will be confident enough to go ahead and achieve whatever goals we set.
“What lies behind you and what lies before you pales in comparison to what lies inside you” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
You are on the road to success, if you take the first step of knowing you and liking you for whatever you are. Realize that you have wonderful talents. Look at your attitude, abilities, skills, knowledge, resources and habits. Identify your strengths and weaknesses. Find out areas where you have to improve. This self discovery is the starting point of all achievements.
Believe in Yourself
“You have to believe in yourself when no one else does. That is what makes you a winner.” – Venus Williams
We can be successful only if we believe we can achieve what we aim for. Therefore, it is essential that we have absolute confidence in ourselves and our ability to succeed. When we attempt to do something ambitious, there is always an uncertainty about the outcome. But if we work with determination and confidence, there is every chance that we will attain our goal. Success often goes to those who dare and act.
“When you are determined to have something, the entire universe conspires to help you achieve it”: Paulo Coelho in ‘The Alchemist’
Never compare yourself with others
Most of us would have frequently asked these questions:
Why am I not as good as the other person?
Why is it that I am not admired?
What stops me from being the best?
There is no other person in the whole world exactly like you. You are unique. You are a miracle! Be proud of the fact that you are different from others. You are in this world with a special purpose. So don’t compare yourself with others. Compare what you are now with your previous best. Try to beat your own previous record. Find out your special talent and develop it day by day.
“We ask ourselves: who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.” – Barak Obama
Banish Fear of Failure
Most people are afraid that they may not succeed in their attempts.
Fear of failure is a very common one. But remember that the greatest success stories are based on disappointments and failures. Thomas Alva Edison failed thousands of time before he invented the electric bulb. The only person who never fails is the one who doesn’t attempt anything. Ships are safe in harbor; but that is not what ships are made for. Go ahead. Do what you want to do with all your strength. Learn from your mistakes. Make failures the stepping stones to success.
“My greatest concern is not whether you have failed but whether you are content with your failure.” – Abraham Lincoln
